Aussie Star James O’Connor Signs with Crusaders for 2025 Season

Former Wallabies star and Queensland Reds playmaker James O’Connor has made a bold career move, signing with the Crusaders for the upcoming Super Rugby Pacific season. This transfer, reported earlier by the New Zealand Herald, caught the attention of rugby fans around the globe, as O’Connor’s shift to New Zealand marks a significant moment in his career.

At 34, O’Connor brings a wealth of experience to the Crusaders. Having played 64 Tests for the Wallabies and accumulating over 120 Super Rugby caps with the Western Force, Melbourne Rebels, and Reds, his expertise will be invaluable to the team.

Though O’Connor has previously played abroad in France with Toulon and in England with London Irish and Sale Sharks, this move presents a unique challenge. As he put it: “I’m really excited to be joining the Crusaders for the 2025 season and eager to test myself in a new environment… My whole career I’ve heard so much about the Crusaders culture and innovation. So to experience it first hand and learn a new way of playing the game is something I’m really looking forward to.”

The timing of this signing is crucial for the Crusaders, who have been navigating life without Richie Mo’unga after his departure post-2023 Rugby World Cup. In 2024, young talents like Rivez Reihana and Taha Kemara were given opportunities at No. 10, but the team struggled under coach Rob Penney, failing to make the playoffs. While there were glimpses of promise as Fergus Burke returned from injury, his subsequent move to Saracens has left a gap.

Coach Penney highlighted O’Connor’s significance: “When we heard he was available we reached out as we thought we could offer him something new and challenging… Having played internationally and in a range of overseas competitions, we’re looking forward to what James can bring to our environment from his 17 seasons of professional football.”

O’Connor’s experience and competitive nature will provide much-needed mentorship to the team, and his presence will create a healthy competition for the coveted No. 10 jersey.
